The clock is ticking for West Virginia musicians hoping to earn a spot at Rock the Roost 2027, Fairmont State University’s inaugural music festival and battle of the bands. Applications are currently being accepted, but bands have only a limited time left to submit before the October 30, 2026 deadline.
Fairmont State University is seeking eight original bands from across West Virginia to compete at Rock the Roost on June 12, 2027. Selected artists will perform before a statewide audience and compete for cash prizes, including an Audience Choice Award.

Bands must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be based in West Virginia and primarily operate in-state
- Perform only original music. Cover bands and cover songs are not eligible.
- Submit a video of one original song performance for consideration
- Be available to perform on June 12, 2027
With the submission deadline rapidly approaching, interested bands are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Rock the Roost will be a full-day music festival celebrating the sounds, stories, and talent of West Virginia. The event will bring together musicians from across the Mountain State for a day of live music, food, vendors, community, and competition on Fairmont State University’s campus.
The festival will showcase artists spanning rock, country, bluegrass, folk, indie, alternative, hip-hop, and more, highlighting the depth and diversity of West Virginia’s music scene.
“Rock the Roost is exactly the kind of thing we want happening at Fairmont State,” said President Mike Davis. “In the summer of 2027, we’re going to welcome musicians from across West Virginia to campus and showcase the energy, creativity, and talent that make this state so special. Our goal is simple: build a new tradition that people look forward to every single year.”
Rock the Roost reflects Fairmont State University’s commitment to serving as a cultural and community hub for North Central West Virginia and beyond. By bringing together musicians, fans, vendors, students, alumni, and community partners, the University is creating an opportunity to celebrate the creative energy of the Mountain State and establish a signature event for years to come.
Bands interested in competing are encouraged not to wait until the last minute. Applications close October 30, 2026.
