Philip Bowen has released “Carolina Wren” which is a song of deep hope in the midst of tragedy. He references the 2016 floods that devastated so much of southern West Virginia and here we are nine years later experiencing similar damages. And hopefully this song will remind those victims that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and hope will spring up from the ground. This Born & Bred writer went to help with cleanup efforts the day after those sixteen floods and encountered a woman much like Susie. It was the Susie’s of the south that brought hope and light to the region.
In oh-sixteen there was a mighty flood
From Roane to Clay they were buried in mud
Here comes Susie with blood on her dress
Givin’ all she has with all she has left

Sam Eplin dropped “If I Could” on March 7th. This bluegrass tinged folk ballad is a beautiful story of love and the desire to have someone love you in spite of your shortcomings. Eplin continues to deliver song after song that demand your attention. Listen to “If I Could” below.

Trevor Cooke has released a full length album called Love Language. Let’s just pause for a moment. Stop what you’re doing. Pay attention to TREVOR COOKE. Trevor is an absolute gem of an artist. He wrote recorded, mixed, produced and mastered this album. If you took Twenty One Pilots, Jack Johnson, Grace VanderWaal, Jason Mraz and Jamiroquai and placed them in a blender you get one of the most talented artists in West Virginia. A Christian group named dc Talk coined the phrase schizophrenic pop which was picked up by Twenty One Pilots to describe their sound and it’s equally fitting for Cooke. This album is full of music that is all over the place inspirationally, yet cohesive. Check out our favorite track “Put The Shovel Down” and the rest of the album at the link below.
