At Born & Bred we focus on West Virginia but as any Mountaineer will tell you, our neighbors problems are our problems. With that in mind we wanted to tell you about “Cardinals At The Window” which released today.
A staggering 136 artists have flocked together to create “Cardinals At The Window, a benefit album of epic proportions for the victims of Hurricane Helene.” The storm, which ravaged Western North Carolina in late September, left a trail of destruction and heartbreak in its wake. Now, a diverse and impressive roster of musicians – from indie darlings like Angel Olsen and The Mountain Goats to giants like Tyler Childers and The War on Drugs – are lending their voices to aid in the recovery.
The album, aptly named after an Appalachian expression signifying hope and good fortune, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community. Libby Rodenbough, a musician herself, joined forces with New Commute founder David Walker and journalist Grayson Haver Currin to curate this ambitious project.
Cardinals At The Window is a sprawling collection of unreleased tracks, demos, and live recordings, offering a treasure trove for music lovers. Highlights include a previously released live version of “Bus Route” from Childers, a haunting live rendition of “Cardinal” by The Mountain Goats, and a shimmering new track from Sylvan Esso. The sheer variety of artists involved is breathtaking, showcasing the breadth and depth of talent who felt compelled to contribute.
But beyond the musical offerings, the album represents a vital lifeline for those struggling to rebuild their lives. All proceeds will be split evenly between three organizations working tirelessly on the ground: the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Rural Organizing and Resilience (ROAR), and BeLoved Asheville. These groups are providing essential resources, from housing and food assistance to long-term community development.
In a time when natural disasters seem to be increasing in frequency and intensity, Cardinals At The Window serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion and collective action. It’s a testament to the enduring power of music to heal and inspire, and a beacon of hope for a community in need.
