As you know by now, we love discovering new WV artists. So getting inboxed by musicians we’ve yet to share is always exciting! Recently, we caught up with Matt VanFossen who dropped a new music this July.

BB: So Matt, tell us who are some influences on your music and writing style?

MV: Reba McEntire has been one of the largest influences on me musically. I’m a huge fan of a story song. Something that makes you feel something whether it’s good or bad. 90’s Country was a massive influence on me. My favorite song of all time is “Shut Up and Drive” by Chely Wright

BB: Nice and how has being from/living in West Virginia influenced your music?

MV: Growing up in Moundsville, WV and going to the same High School as Brad Paisley the bar was set high for anyone who had musical ambitions. Wheeling, WV being the home of Jamboree USA and Jamboree In The Hills there was no shortage of country music growing up to feed the fire.

BB: So music was a part of you at an early age! Love that you went to the same high school as Brad. Tell us about your music!

MV:  Being a big fan of 90’s Country my music has really strong throwbacks to that time. The messages of love and heartbreak and dealing with real life issues.

BB: And who are some West Virginia artists you’re listening to?

MV: Obviously Brad Paisley! I love his first two records! Then of course Kathy Mattea “Walking Away a Winner” still one of my faves.

BB: Kathy Mattes is another great one, she is going to be in Clarksburg with Mountain Stage soon. So what else are you listening to currently?

MV: Carly Pearce, Tyler Childers and Sara Evans

BB: Love it and what inspired you or took you down the path of music?

MV: Honestly, watching the Grand Ole Opry and Jamboree In The Hills growing up. The love of real life story songs hit me hard even as a child.

BB: Such a great musical culture to be raised in! Any upcoming shows?

MV: Opening for Dillion Carmichael at the Mason County Fair in Point Pleasant August 8th at 8pm!

BB: Great! Well congrats on the music video and keep us posted on what’s next for you, Matt!
