Charles Wesley Godwin is everywhere you turn these days. From appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Joe Rogan Experience people everywhere are hearing about and paying attention to the talented musician many of us have known about for a while. It makes sense then that he’d be invited to perform on Apple Music’s Nashville Session. Godwin’s performance included two reimaginings of tracks from “Family Ties” and and amazing cover of Youngstown from Bruce Springsteen’s 1995 album “The Ghost of Tom Joad.”

The first track is a subdued version of the rocking anthem Cue Country Roads. This version pulls back the rocking drive of the original that empathizes the message of longing to be home. The second track is the recently released albums title track Family Ties which also received a more subdued treatment. Both tracks lose nothing with these stripped down approaches and only serve to highlight the lyricism of Charles and his vocal.
The third track is the aforementioned Springsteen cover. Godwin is the perfect artist to take on this track that discusses the history of the Ohio city, Youngstown. The track tells the story of the rise and fall of the city through the lens of wars ranging from the Civil War to the Vietnam and the lasting impact of the decline of steel production. His take on this track is heartfelt and shows the brokenness of the narrative.
