In a move that celebrates the rich musical heritage of the region and challenges the traditional narrative of hip-hop, Appalshop’s June Appal Recordings has released “No Options: Hip-Hop in Appalachia.” This landmark album, was released on August 2nd to coincide with both Emancipation Day, August 8th, celebrated by many Black communities in Central Appalachia, and National Hip-Hop Day, August 11th,  marking its significance in the cultural calendar.

“No Options” defies the usual trend of hip-hop compilations focusing on urban areas, instead choosing to spotlight the voices of small-town and rural artists across Appalachia. Artists hail from states including Alabama, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, and even New York, demonstrating the widespread reach of the genre within the region.

One particularly striking contribution comes from Stunna T, whose track “Show Up” was recorded over the phone from Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, highlighting the resilience and creative spirit even in challenging circumstances.

Executive producer JK Turner underscores the album’s mission: “Hip-hop in Appalachia is a testament to the enduring power of music to forge connections and give voice to the marginalized.” The fusion of hip-hop with Appalachian culture creates a unique form of expression that speaks to the resilience and creativity of the people.

This 24-track compilation boasts a diverse lineup, featuring artists like West Virginia’s own, Monstalung, considered the grandfather of Appalachian hip-hop, alongside fellow mountaineers, Shelem, Gardenn, Deep Jackson, Duck City Music and Jumbo Green. Also featured are geonovah, Sista Zock, Poetic Peth, Black Atticus, and Kelle Jolly. Each artist brings their own unique perspective and style, showcasing the breadth and depth of the genre in the region.

Of being a part of this project, Monstalung said “I am extremely honored to be a part of such an amazing compilation with so many dope artists from Appalachia. Personally, I think there are some unique, intriguing, and relatable stories from artists who make hip-hop music in Appalachia. This compilation showcases exactly that.” He said his involvement came after Crystal Good contacted him and put him in touch with the album’s producers, JK Turner, Dr. William Turner, and Dr. Ted Olson.

James “Sparky” Rucker, the 2022 winner of the Black Appalachian Storytellers Fellowship Award, lauds June Appal’s forward-thinking approach and guarantees hip-hop fans will find much to appreciate in this collection.

“No Options: Hip-Hop in Appalachia” is currently available for preorder through June Appal’s Bandcamp, inviting listeners to discover a vibrant and often overlooked corner of the hip-hop world. This groundbreaking album is a celebration of artistic expression, cultural heritage, and the power of music to connect and empower communities across Appalachia.
