Matt Mullins & The Bringdowns took to social media to debut a project that saw them collaborate with Healing Appalachia. The two forces joined to tell the story of Walter DeBarr who passed away in February of 2022 at the age of 39. DeBarr was an accomplished musician and songwriter and he and Mullins developed a relationship that made Matt want to tell the story of Walter. From the bands Facebook:
“Healing Appalachia and Hope In The Hills have collaborated with the band, Matt Mullins & The Bringdowns, to share the compelling story of West Virginia musician Walter DeBarr. His life journey, marked by struggles with substance abuse and domestic violence, takes a transformative turn through the healing power of music.
This partnership has culminated in a poignant music video, set to be released on Tuesday, March 12th, featuring Beckley-based group Matt Mullins & The Bringdowns performing Buckhannon native Walter DeBarr’s song. The video incorporates clips provided by The Folkway Film Productions and Kid In The Background Media Factory, capturing Walter’s personal narrative on his struggles with substance misuse and his journey towards finding his voice and sobriety.
Matt Mullins, having encountered Walter during his time in a recovery home post-prison release, witnessed firsthand the musician’s discovery of purpose and the promising trajectory of a successful national tour. This music video serves as a powerful narrative, portraying the highs and lows of Walter’s story, aiming not only to shed light on his remarkable journey but also to provide valuable information on available support and resources.
Ultimately, this project seeks to raise awareness about the challenges for those who suffer from Substance Use Disorder, while emphasizing the importance and opportunities that support networks and organizations have on making a positive impact on SUD and addiction. “Hopefully showing people that need help, the numbers of folks that are there to help”
